Diamond Black crashguard |
Bullet is one of the most stable motorcycles that I have ridden. Even on the most troublesome tracks its wheels stay firmly grounded. Most of the injuries therefore from bullet is not while you are riding it, but before and after the ride. I have had my Bullet fall on me while getting it on and off the stand, while trying to back it uphill and worst while tilting it to remove the rear wheel. As against numerous such stationary accidents only twice have I fallen while riding Enfield and one of them was because my airfly style crash guard got stuck in an auto that passed me too closely. In all the instances I avoided punctured tank and fractured limbs because the crash guard took the major brunt of the accident. The importance of crash guard therefore cannot be overstated when the next line of defence protecting your cruiser is your body.
Post my Airfly style crashguard crash I started looking for the safest leg guards available in the market. The rod style did not appeal as it does not offer the pillion any protection. Other crashguards with fancier designs only afforded more places which could get hooked on passing vehicles.
That is how I zeroed in on the Diamond Style crashguard.

Pros or advantages of Diamond Black crashguard
Simple design does not provide any hooks or rods that could latch on to passing vehicles. Supports both rider and pillion. Makes your bullet look broader thereby increasing its appeal. Angled pipes on the bottom keep the motorbike upright even if it crashes while moving.
Cons or issues with Diamond Black crashguard
The clamps that are provided with these crash guards do not secure it firmly to the chassis. I have tried various combinations of clamps and screws and yet one feisty kick is enough to tilt the crash guard slightly in either direction. I am not sure if this is done by design, so that the shock of the fall directly does not get transferred to the body of the vehicle. However if that is not the case it can surely be avoided by having teeth in the clamps of the crash guard.

Solution to secure the crash guard firmly to the chassis so that it does not rotate on impact.
Usage tips for Diamond Black crashguard
Experiment with 2-3 mounting brackets to see which one secures the crash guard most firmly. For good measure kick the crash guard once installed to see whether it is rotating. I have noticed that black powder coated crashguards are easier to maintain as they don't rust easily and in case of scratches you can very easily use spray paint to cover the defect. Another point to consider is the thickness and weight of the crash guard. Choose the thickest and the heaviest crash guard available in the market. It may reduce your mileage but the weight and thickness will offer better protection.
